How to play 501 darts

Every player begins a leg on 501 points. After each visit, the total scored with up to three darts is subtracted from the remaining score. Players alternate visits until someone reaches exactly zero under the selected checkout rule.

Most organised 501 matches use double-out: the final dart must land in a double, including the inner bull which scores 50. Ocheflow also supports straight-out for simpler games and master-out when the winning dart may be a double or triple.

What causes a bust?

A bust cancels the entire visit and restores the score from the start of that visit. In double-out, a visit is a bust when the player:

  • scores more than the remaining total;
  • leaves a score of one;
  • reaches zero without finishing on a double.
Example

You have 32 left. A single 16 leaves 16, but a single 16 followed by single 8 and single 8 reaches zero without a double. The visit is a bust and your score returns to 32.

Legs, sets and match formats

A leg is one complete game from 501 to zero. A match may be played as a best-of number of legs, or as sets containing several legs. Ocheflow keeps the active leg, set score and starting player visible throughout the match.

Checkout suggestions

When a finish is available, Ocheflow can show a practical route. Routes are suggestions rather than absolute rules: experienced players may choose another path to leave a preferred double or reduce risk after a missed first dart.

Practical 501 tips

  1. Think one visit ahead. A strong setup dart can be more valuable than chasing a maximum.
  2. Know the common finishes. Start with 40, 32, 24 and 16, then learn routes above 60.
  3. Avoid bogey numbers. Scores such as 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159 cannot be finished in three darts.
  4. Use the same preferred doubles. Repetition makes decision-making easier under pressure.
