What is a darts checkout?

A checkout is the final sequence of darts used to finish an X01 leg. Under standard double-out rules, the final dart must land in a double or the inner bull.

How players choose a checkout route

Several routes can be mathematically valid. A practical route usually considers three things: the highest reliable scoring segment, the double you prefer and the score left after a missed first dart.

Example: 94

A common route is T18 · D20. Another valid route may suit a player who prefers D16 or wants a different safety leave.

Common route principles

  • Use familiar trebles rather than unusual combinations.
  • Leave an even number whenever possible.
  • Avoid routes that leave a difficult single before the final double.
  • Consider the miss: a good route still leaves a playable finish.

Bogey numbers

The recognised three-dart bogey numbers are 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. These scores cannot be finished in three darts while ending on a double.

Common checkout mistakes

  • Trying to finish a bogey number.
  • Leaving an odd score with one dart remaining.
  • Forgetting that bull counts as double 25.
  • Choosing a route without considering a missed first dart.
  • Memorising routes without practising the required singles and doubles.

How to practise checkouts

Start with one-dart finishes from 2 to 40. Then learn two-dart routes from 41 to 80 before moving into larger three-dart combinations. Use the checkout chart to study and the calculator to compare alternatives.
